Emily Whalen is a doctoral candidate in History at the University of Texas - Austin.

A Graduate Fellow at the Clements Center, Emily specializes in US foreign policy in the Middle East from the late Cold War to the present. Her work also explores contemporary issues related to violence, sovereignty, and justice in the international system. She works as a consultant for the EastWest Institute and was previously a coder for the Armed Conflict Location and Event Database. Emily contributes to Not Even Past, a public history website, and Foreign Policy's Best Defense column. A distinguished graduate of the University of Virginia (BA 2010), Emily speaks French, Italian, and Levantine Arabic.
